LGBTQ+ Identity
Affirming Therapy
Sacramento and online in California
Andy Price, LMFT provides affirming therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals in Sacramento and across California, providing support with navigating identity, coming out, the expectations of others, relationships, and self-confidence.
Andy Price, LMFT is a queer and non-binary therapist, allowing you to dive into your experiences without having to explain yourself.
As an LGBTQ+ person in this current era, you may be wondering:
How will my family, friends, or workplace respond if I come out or transition?
When can I stop living in “unprecedented times” and start living my life?
How do I live my best life despite the horrors?
You may be:
Wanting to explore and make sense of your identity
Tired of explaining your identity
Carrying lingering feelings of shame from past experiences or religious environments
Looking for a welcoming environment and trusting person to make sense of your identity and your experiences
Trying to navigate dating, relationships, sex, and intimacy in an aligned, authentic way now that you’ve embraced your identity
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy helps queer and trans individuals build a life that feels authentic, affirmed, and empowered.
“Queer people don’t grow up as ourselves, we grow up playing a version of ourselves that sacrifices authenticity to minimise humiliation & prejudice. The massive task of our adult lives is to unpick which parts of ourselves are truly us & which parts we’ve created to protect us.”
— Alexander Leon

Approach to LGBTQ Affirming Therapy
-
I practice from a gender affirming model, based on evidence-based best practices, including current guidelines from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). This means I validate your identity exactly as you understand it, honoring your self-described identity, name, and pronouns. My role is not to tell you what your identity is. Rather, I’ll provide space to help you empower you to determine how you understand your identity and what transition-related decisions feel best for you.
-
As an LGBTQ person, you’ve likely spent your life being told who you should be and how you should be acting. Narrative therapy helps you recognize the stories you’ve been telling yourself, determine whether these stories are still serving you, and re-author your life story to one that better serves you.
-
Parts work, informed by internal family systems, can help you understand the different parts of you that took on protective roles to help you survive. This may include parts that feel self-critical, avoidant, or perfectionist.
Underneath these protective parts are more vulnerable parts of you, parts that often carry the pain of past experiences.
In therapy, we’ll work to increase compassion for your protective parts and build the emotional safety to connect with the more vulnerable parts of your experience.
-
Experiential therapy helps you create new emotional experiences. Instead of just telling a narrative of events and analyzing (or intellectualizing) them, you’ll be guided to explore what is happening on an emotional level. Over time, you’ll be guided to express the emotions you’ve been holding inside (in other words, feeling your feelings)
-
I work from a relational, depth-oriented perspective. What that means is we're not just managing symptoms or building coping strategies. We’ll be looking at how you’ve learned to protect yourself, whether those protective strategies are still needed, and what it might look like to relate to yourself and others differently.
You are the expert of your life experience

A Container for Growth and Change
Many experiences of identity-based rejection developed through relationships, which also means healing often happens through relationships.
Therapy becomes a place where you experience connection differently: curiosity instead of judgment, with honesty, and with consistency.
Because of that, finding the right therapist matters. I encourage ongoing feedback and collaboration so we can make sure this process is working for you.

You Direct This Journey
In therapy, you are the person in the driver’s seat. My role is to offer guidance, insight, support, and tools. You get to decide the direction we take, the speed we travel at, and where you want the journey to lead.
-

Queer Joy and Empowerment
Queer and trans people deserve so much more than to be told that they’re resilient and brave. In therapy, we’ll do more than just help you cope. We’ll help you find empowerment and joy.

My style is compassionate, authentic, honest, and direct.
We’ll begin by getting to know you, exploring your history, how you understanding your identity, your relationships, and beginning to recognize the ways you’ve learned to survive.
As we get to know each other, I’ll point out things you may not be noticing yourself. When helpful, I believe in the power of care-frontation: being direct and challenging you in a way that comes from care, compassion, and curiosity.

Hi, I’m Andy (they/them)
I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I am passionate about helping people build authentic, connected, and affirming relationships—with themselves, their partners, and their communities.
I specialize in working with queer and trans individuals, couples, and non-monogamous relationships, supporting them as they navigate challenges of identity, sex and intimacy, relationships, political stressors, and life’s tough moments.
Beyond my clinical work, I’m a researcher and speaker. My research centers queer and trans well-being and relationships. I have presented at professional and academic conferences on topics such as gender identity, LGBTQIA+ chosen family, and experiential and narrative therapy.
I value authentically showing up as myself, which means I’ll show you my personality, share my sense of humor with you, and also sit with you in moments of pain. I hope that authentically showing up as myself empowers you to authentically be yourself.
