What to Expect During LGBTQ+ Affirming Couples Therapy
-
De-escalate your conflict cycle
You'll learn to understand your conflict cycle — how each of you reacts when you feel hurt, unseen, or worried — and how those protective responses unintentionally keep the disconnection going. For LGBTQ+ couples, that cycle is often shaped by external factors: family relationships, new understandings of your identity, a desire to express your true sense of a self, or the exhaustion of existing as a queer person during “unprecedented” times
-
Learn New Ways of Connecting and Communicating
We'll build ways of communicating and sharing how you really feel, so your relationship can become a safe place to share your inner fears — including fears you may not bring up anywhere else. Once you can identify your conflict cycle, you can start to interrupt it instead of letting it take over. You'll learn how to say what you really need, in a way your partner can actually hear. For sex and intimacy concerns, we'll use practical skills (like mindfulness and sensate focus) to help you feel more connected and less anxious.
-
Integrate New Skills
Through therapy, you'll learn to interrupt your conflict cycle and put these new ways of communicating into practice in daily life — building confidence that your needs matter and that your partner (or partners) can be there for you.
-
Evidence-Based Approaches
I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence-based approach that draws on attachment theory and the science of emotion to help couples build a deeper, mutually supportive bond. I also draw from the Gottman Method to help you understand your relationship dynamics and build tools for a lasting, stronger relationship. I adapt my approaches to meet the specific needs of your relationship.
-
Deep Conversations
In therapy, we’ll work to go beneath surface-level coping. I’ll support you to build a greater level of vulnerability and having deep conversations that will strengthen your emotional connection.
-
Couples Therapy That Gets Your Needs
We’ll attend to how identity, transition, gender dysphoria, or jealousy shape your experiences with communication, sex, and intimacy.
Gender transition, or any new understanding of your identity, can shift a relationship's dynamics. We'll work through those changes together, honoring your experience without treating your identity as a problem to be solved. Many LGBTQ+ individuals have complicated family relationships. We’ll work to understand and navigate these experiences.

This practice is a good fit for couples who want both practical communication tools and deeper work on the patterns shaping their relationship. -
This practice may not be the best fit if you’re currently experiencing an acute mental health crisis, struggling with substance abuse, or need intensive structure and stabilization. Please see my Resources page for a list of support that can better serve your current needs.

Most couples start to notice small changes within the first few sessions. Deeper, lasting change typically takes several months. If you're working through long-standing disconnection or a deep betrayal, the process may take longer.

My specialities include LGBTQIA+ relationships, gender affirming care, affairs and breaches of trust, conflict, trauma, emotional connection, sex and intimacy, neurodivergent relationships, and conscious uncoupling.

Hi, I’m Andy (they/them)
I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I provide sessions in person in Sacramento and online across California. I am passionate about helping people build authentic, connected, and affirming relationships.
I specialize in working with queer and trans individuals, couples, and non-monogamous relationships, supporting them as they navigate challenges of identity, sex and intimacy, relationships, political stressors, and life’s tough moments.
I value authentically showing up as myself, which means I’ll show you my personality, share my sense of humor with you, and also sit with you in moments of pain. I hope that authentically showing up as myself empowers you to authentically be yourself.
